💳 Money, Visas & Local Regulations
Visas and Entry Requirements
All countries require a valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity. It is your own responsibility to have the correct travel documentation. Visa requirements for your trip will vary depending on where you are from.
While we provide the following official links in good faith, rules can change without warning. Please check the information yourself independently:
If you require a visa to enter Indonesia, please begin the application process at least two weeks before your departure.
Spending Money & Currency Exchange
During this tour, the local currency you will use is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). For the most up-to-date daily exchange rates, please refer to XE Currency Converter.
The best way to carry your money is via debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout South East Asia and generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. Traveling with both a Visa and Mastercard is an excellent backup plan. Please note, your bank will charge a fee for overseas withdrawals.
Carrying cash in USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, or AUD is highly recommended for times when ATMs are not accessible (such as deep in wildlife conservation zones). Please ensure your foreign currency bills are brand new and crisp. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears, folds, and blemishes will not be accepted by local money changers. Credit cards can be used at upmarket restaurants and large stores.
Emergency Fund Backup
Please make sure you have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an emergency backup fund. This is solely to be used when unpredictable circumstances outside our control (such as a sudden natural disaster or extreme weather) require an unexpected change to our planned route.
🩺 Health, Safety & Local Dress Standards
Medical and Physical Readiness
There are no specific health requirements for this trip, but you should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure. We recommend carrying a personal First Aid kit and hand sanitizers.
In Asia, pharmacies stock western equivalent drugs, but they are produced locally. Please bring the full generic drug name with you if you need to purchase a replacement prescription. When selecting this active East Java tour package, please carefully assess your physical ability to cope with active volcano trekking and long overland drives.
Trip-Specific Safety Notes
We strongly recommend the use of a neck wallet or money belt while traveling for the safe keeping of your passport, air tickets, cash, and other valuable items. Leave your valuable jewelry at home—you won’t need it while traveling. Many of our selected hotels have safety deposit boxes. A reliable lock is recommended for securing your luggage.
Cultural Dress Culture
When packing, be aware that dress standards are conservative throughout Asia. To respect local communities and for your own comfort, we strongly recommend modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees).
Loose, lightweight, long clothing is both respectful and cool in the predominantly hot climate. Shorts should be knee-length. Singlets and tank tops are not acceptable. One-piece bathing suits are recommended, and topless sunbathing is strictly unacceptable.
🧼 Laundry Facilities
Laundry facilities are offered by some of our hotels for a reasonable charge. There will be times when you may want to do a quick manual wash during the road trip, so we suggest you bring non-polluting or biodegradable soap.
🧭 Detailed Trip Notes
Indonesia has long been an intriguing and deeply rewarding destination to visit. English is widely spoken, and transportation infrastructure is good, but it may not match the exact standards expected in developed Western nations. If you are able to bring with you a healthy dose of patience, a great sense of humor, and a willingness to interact with the local people, your travel experience will be greatly enhanced.
