Detailed Trip Notes

Indonesia has long been a great tourist destination and offers an intriguing overland experience. English is widely spoken in main areas, and local transportation is readily available, but infrastructure might not be at the same level as you would expect in highly developed countries. If you are able to bring with you a lot of patience, a great sense of humor, and a willingness to interact with the local communities, your travel experience will be greatly enhanced.

Spending Money and Tipping

Every traveler is different and therefore personal spending money requirements will vary. Some travelers may order more drinks while others like to purchase more local souvenirs. Please consider your own spending habits when it comes to allowing for extra drinks, shopping, and tipping the local crew during the trip.

Money Exchange Advice

During this tour the local currency you will use is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). As currency exchange rates fluctuate, we ask that you refer to official websites like www.xe.com for daily updates. The best way to manage your money is with debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currency from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout major towns and generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard as a backup plan. Please note, your home bank will charge a fee for overseas withdrawals.

USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, and AUD cash is recommended for times when local ATMs are not accessible or offline. You should bring some cash with you for emergency situations, but carrying only cash is a high safety risk. An ATM card and some cash is the ideal mix. Travelers cheques can be tricky and expensive to exchange, so we do not recommend them as a primary source of funds. Credit cards can be used at upmarket restaurants and larger stores. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are crisp, new, and in good condition to be accepted by local money changers.

Emergency Fund Setup

Please also make sure you have access to at least an additional USD 200 as an emergency fund, to be used only when circumstances outside our control require an unexpected change to our planned route. This is a very rare occurrence.

Health and Safety

Please note inoculations may be recommended for the regions visited. It is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure.

There are no specific mandatory health requirements for this trip. However, you should consult your doctor for medical updates before departure. We recommend that you carry a personal First Aid kit, hand sanitizers, and any personal medical prescriptions. In Indonesian pharmacies, western-style drugs are usually available but produced locally, so please bring the full generic drug name with you. When selecting your trip, please carefully read the itinerary details and assess your physical ability to cope with our style of adventure.

Trip Specific Safety Guidelines

We strongly recommend the use of a neck wallet or money belt while traveling for the safekeeping of your passport, air tickets, cash, and valuable items. Leave your expensive jewelry at home as you won’t need it while traveling. Many of the hotels we use have safety deposit boxes which is the most secure way of storing your valuables. A small padlock is recommended for securing your luggage zippers during transits.

Local Dress and Etiquette

When packing, please be aware that dress standards are generally conservative throughout Indonesia. To respect the local culture and for your own comfort, we strongly recommend modest clothing. This means covering your shoulders and avoiding very short shorts. Loose, lightweight, long clothing is both respectful and cool in the predominantly hot climate. Shorts should ideally be knee-length. Singlets and tank tops are not fully acceptable in villages. One-piece bathing suits are recommended, and topless sunbathing is strictly unacceptable.
